The rulebook and quick start guide are littered with beautifully sculpted and painted models as inspiration and the flexibility of the ruleset (covering circa 200 years of warfare fromВ the war of the Spanish Succession in 1701 to the Second Sudan War in 1898) gives you a great range of miniatures to buy, paint and enjoy. Overall I was impressed by the quality of Black Powder : Waterloo.

You receive each of the various unit types with the exceptions of skirmishers, making a separate essential purchase for any reader of the Bernard Conwell Sharpe series a small unit of 95 th rifles. Putting this minor gripe aside the box set is a greatly discounted introduction to this period of manoeuvre based warfare (sometimes described as advanced rock вЂ“ paper вЂ“ scissors by some of my gaming friends). This specifically becomes a challenge when you consider the richness of the equipment carried by each model. The Napoleonic period was a riot of colour with each unit having very specific markings and uniforms. One of the larger absences in my opinion is the lack of a coherent painting guide. It also includes several handy reference tables for break tests, weapon types and unit profiles. Spread across nine pages it covers the unit formations, sequence of play, moving, terrain, shooting, hand to hand combat and morale. The quick start guide is very easy to read and gives you the basis of the information you require to play the game.

I would suggest for expanding your box however to look outside the warlord range at either Perry miniatures or Victrix which give slightly more bang for your buck / a larger variety of poses. They are however well detailed, easy to assembleВ and as with many NapoleonicвЂ™s, a joy top paint. The infantry plastic sculpts are limited in pose, with all models in the Porte arms position.

The models in the boxed set allow you to field: 48 French infantry, 12 Chasseurs a Cheval cavalry, 1 French foot commander, 48 British line infantry, 24 Hanoverian infantry, 1 royal artillery 6pdr, 1 British foot commander. The assault on La Haye Sainte, theВ French Old guardВ column breaking against the British thin red line,В the French cavalry expending their strength against the British squares and the British heavy cavalry breakingВ a French square. The rest as they say is history.ДЇor the war gamer this battle allows for a number of interesting and varied scenarios. Despite this plan (and a full-scale withdrawal of the Prussian force), Napoleon and his Marshals failed to press the advantage, marched 33,000 men backwards and forwards several times inexplicitly allowing the Prussians to reform and the British to fall back to a safe position, Waterloo. The two allied armies were separated and Napoleon correctly deduced he could isolate them by attacking the Prussians first whilst holding the British at bay. The second was the Duke of WellingtonвЂ™s British army consisting 30,000 British, 16,000 Hanoverians, 6000 Kings Germans legion, and 40,000 Dutch.
